How it started

Our story

A founder-led studio built to respect the client, the craft, and the people behind the work.

By The Owl was built in 2022 with a clear belief: a good production company should protect the client's time, money and ambition, while also giving the people behind the work the tools, respect and environment they need to deliver their best.

The reason

The handoff
is the problem.

Most creative work changes hands at least twice. An agency wins it, a production company shoots it, a post house finishes it, and the person who sold the idea is not in the room when the decisions that matter get made. Every one of those handovers is a place where the work quietly becomes something else, and the client is the only person present at all of them, which makes them the project manager by default.

We took the handovers out. One commission. One team. The same person answers for it at the end.

Our Journey

Filming since 2018. Building By The Owl since 2022.

Every year has had a full slate. These are the ones worth naming — the brands, contracts and credits that moved the company forward.

  1. 2018–21

    • pnb MetLife
    • 6 verified credits
    • Solo, then studio

The foundation — proof of capability, before the company existed

A national insurance brand, run end to end — plus a run of music videos with credits on the public record.

Four years of solo production built the foundation the company would scale from — one client run solo across every discipline, and a body of verified cinematography and DoP work that stands on its own.

    • Commercial production
    • Interview production
    • Cinematography
    • Direction of Photography
    • Post-production

Two years of wedding and event work, then a year in the edit suite, built the finishing standard the company still works to.

  2. 2022

    • By The Owl founded
    • Donatekart
    • 15 films in one year

The launch — the company opens as a national brand's full-time production partner

By The Owl founded — and became Donatekart's exclusive production partner from day one.

The company launched already embedded, not pitching — the sole production partner behind a national NGO's donation campaigns, delivering on a continuous monthly cadence.

    • Founded 2022
    • Campaign films
    • NGO and social
    • Volume production

Thirty-three films end to end across 2021–2024 — the longest client relationship the company has run.

  3. 2023

    • Ministry of Culture
    • Government of India
    • 3 months on the road

First institutional client — a government contract, won and delivered

A Government of India contract. Three months on the road.

The first institutional client at national scale — a documentary contract shot and cut in-house across four regions, proving the company could deliver at government procurement standard.

    • Government of India
    • Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar
    • Documentary
    • DoP + Editor

The existing campaign client kept running in parallel — nine more films while the crew was on the road.

  4. 2024

    • Mitchells & Butlers
    • ARTCORE
    • ELVT and E1

Peak capacity — multiple markets, concurrent delivery

An F&B group, a full events season, two international clients — running at once.

The highest concurrent client load the company has carried — food & beverage, a full live-events season, two London-based clients running in parallel, plus a podcast series.

    • F&B content production
    • Full event coverage
    • London production
    • Podcast production

The rest of the events calendar, a run of specialist interviews and the final films on the 2022 campaign client filled the gaps between.

  5. 2025

    • Wipro
    • Ministry of Culture returns

Proof of retention — the first repeat clients

A national brand, and the government client, both came back.

The milestone here is retention, not a new name — the same institutional client returned for a second contract, alongside new expo and event coverage work.

    • Expo & event coverage
    • Government of India

Music and live work continued through the year, plus retained work that doesn't get announced publicly.

Current momentum — new relationships, year still open

A fresh run of new clients, with the year still running.

The range

Every kind of room,
one team.

Not a list of numbers. This is the shape of the work.

Brand films for national companies. Government documentaries shot over months on the road. Live event coverage for club nights and festival seasons. Real estate walkthroughs. AI video for briefs that move faster than a shoot schedule allows. Different rooms, different rules, same team running all of it.

Everything above came out of one crew. Judge that.

The team

Who is on it

Roles, not a headcount. The crew is sized to the job and named in the schedule you approve.

  • Before the shoot

Director and producer. The person who scopes the job writes the treatment, and is the person who will direct it.

  • On the day

On the call sheet: director, producer, camera, gaffer, sound, and a pilot where a shot needs one.

  • After the shoot

Editor, colourist and motion designer, working off one timeline rather than passing files between three companies.

Ash runs it, as Creative Director, DoP & Colourist. That name is on the call, on the call sheet and on the finished film.

Who runs it

The person you brief
is the founder.

Ash runs By The Owl as Creative Director, DoP & Colourist, and brings a filmmaker's eye to every job the company takes. The same person scopes the brief, directs the shoot and signs off the grade.

Ash, founder of By The Owl, on set

The range behind one person is what the company's decisions are made out of.

Filmmaking

The practice connects story planning, production execution, camera language and edit judgement. That foundation is what lets one team carry a job from the treatment to the grade without a handover.

Travel

Working on location builds an understanding of people, culture and real spaces. That is what makes a documentary approach specific rather than generic — the place looks like itself.

Music

Years inside the DJ and event scene — Senses, Take Two, ARTCORE — feed instinct for pacing, emotion and recall: the part of the judgement that is not technical.
